Active noise cancelling (ANC)

Microphones listen to outside noise and play an opposite sound wave to cancel it, mainly low hums like engines.

ANC cancels steady low-frequency noise (planes, buses, air conditioning) best. Voices and sudden sounds are harder. Transparency mode does the opposite, letting outside sound in. ANC uses battery, so makers quote battery life with ANC on and off.
