CPU socket

The physical connector on the motherboard. A CPU only fits motherboards with the same socket (e.g. AM5, LGA 1851).

The socket must match between CPU and motherboard. Even with the right socket, the board may need a BIOS update for new CPUs — check the board maker's CPU support list.
